Adidas and Arsenal Unveil 2024-25 Away Kit Inspired by African Design Traditions
Adidas, in collaboration with Arsenal Football Club, has today unveiled the new 2024-25 season away kit. This Arsenal jersey has been co-created with the renowned fashion brand Labrum London, which is dedicated to telling the lesser-known stories of Africa. Drawing inspiration from African design traditions, this collaboration aims to honour the bond between Arsenal and its African fans.
The jersey features a black base adorned with striking white zigzag patterns extending from the armpits down the sides of the shirt and shorts. This design, hand-drawn by Labrum London, symbolises the beauty of movement in sports and aims to preserve the patterns commonly seen in African design, crafts, and decorations.
Arsenal’s Nigerian legend Nwankwo Kanu said, “I am very proud to wear this jersey designed by Labrum London, representing my club and African heritage. This jersey is a masterpiece, and its patterns and colours symbolise our connection with African players, Islington, and African fans worldwide. I am pleased to see such a stylish design paying tribute to this unique bond. I look forward to seeing our team wear this kit next season.”
Within the prominent zigzag pattern, delicate markings resembling cowries are featured, paying homage to the historical significance of cowries as an early form of currency in parts of Africa.
The jersey also incorporates the symbolic colours of Pan-Africanism – red and green – which can be seen on the collar, the Adidas three stripes on the shoulders, and the front Adidas logo and Arsenal cannon emblem.
These colours and cultural elements highlight Arsenal’s past and present connections with African communities in London and beyond, embodying the rich cultural traditions within the team and its fan base.
Sam Handy, Senior Vice President of Product and Design at Adidas, said, “Our design philosophy merges with Labrum London’s to sincerely honour the deep connections between Arsenal and the African community. Our designers teamed up with the Labrum London team to skilfully showcase this connection in the jersey, making this an extraordinary collaboration. I am excited to see fans and players don this jersey next season.”
In addition to the new away kit, this collaboration also offers fans a special Adidas, Arsenal, and Labrum London capsule collection from Labrum London’s perspective. The collection includes five items, featuring the away kit’s patterns and colours, further explored in two jackets, a T-shirt, a sweatshirt, and track pants.
All items feature the newly interpreted Labrum London logo. The logo adopts the brand’s signature “Nomoli” stone carving style, originating from the Mende and Kisii tribes of Sierra Leone, symbolising the preservation of traditional culture and the hope for cultural prosperity. The logo is present on the back of the sweatshirt and T-shirt, while the away jersey, two jackets, and track pants incorporate the deconstructed “Nomoli” and zigzag patterns.
Labrum London founder Foday Dumbuya said, “As a second-generation immigrant growing up in London, I have admired the incredible performances of outstanding African Arsenal players. These players are role models who excel on the pitch and represent my broader community. The bond between Arsenal and the African community is unbreakable. I am immensely proud to collaborate with them on this series.”
The player version of the away jersey features HEAT.RDY technology, promoting airflow through premium fabric for a cooling effect. The fan version includes AEROREADY technology, using moisture-wicking fabric to keep fans dry on the pitch.
